The Beginning
Take refuge and arouse bodhichitta.
The Main Part
Meditate on the sufferings of animals: Animals living in the great oceans are as many as the dregs of wine. The larger ones swallow the smaller ones, while the smaller ones burrow into the larger ones and devour them. Many of them are born and die in total darkness.
Animals living on land, though free, are in constant fear and dread of various predators. They kill and eat each other. Animals kept by humans suffer from being stupid and mute, and they have to endure being slaughtered, beaten, and burdened with heavy loads.
We would find it unbearable if we were simply forbidden to speak for one day or were hit just once by someone. For animals, however, such suffering is their constant companion throughout their lives. Therefore, resolve: Since I have escaped the animal realm for now, I must be certain to practice the Dharma and never create the causes for being reborn there. At same time, I will generate compassion toward all the miserable animals.
The Ending
Dedicate all the merit of your practice to all sentient beings.
