The Beginning
Take refuge and arouse bodhichitta.
The Main Part
Meditate on the classifications of taking refuge: There are different levels of taking refuge based on one's motivation. Refuge of the lesser capacity is taken out of fear of the lower realms. Refuge of the middling capacity is taken out of the desire for personal liberation from samsara. Refuge of the great capacity is taken for the sake of attaining enlightenment to free all sentient beings.
There is also the classification of outer refuge in the Buddha, Dharma, and Sangha, and inner refuge in the Guru, Deva, and Dakini. The ultimate refuge is realizing the indwelling Buddha nature within one's own mind.
I should strive to take the refuge of the great capacity, motivated by bodhichitta. Therefore, resolve: From now on, I will make the Three Jewels my ultimate source of protection and guidance in all my lives.
The Ending
Dedicate all the merit of your practice to all sentient beings.
