Lesson 41

Abstract

This is Lesson 41 from A Comprehensive Commentary on the Words of My Perfect Teacher, beginning the detailed study of the Six Realms' sufferings with the Eight Hot Hells, within the chapter on "The defects of samsara." The lesson opens by establishing that different scriptural accounts of hells reflect the varying karmic projections of different beings' minds, and urges students to ground their understanding in the Buddha's authoritative teachings rather than personal scepticism. Each of the eight hot hells is presented in sequence — from the Reviving Hell through to the Hell of Ultimate Torment — with its specific torments, the karmic causes that lead to rebirth there, and the immense lifespans involved. Throughout, the teacher draws vivid comparisons between human suffering and the incomparably greater torments of hell, using examples from daily life to make the teachings relatable. The lesson repeatedly emphasises the urgency of confession and purification before death, warning particularly against breaking tantric samaya vows, slandering teachers, and stealing from the Three Jewels. It concludes by cautioning that claiming high spiritual realisations while neglecting to purify negative karma is self-deception, and that building a solid foundation through the common preliminaries is essential before advancing to any higher practice.

Key Quotes

Hells are the projections of beings' minds. Because beings' minds vary greatly, hells differ greatly as well. Therefore, the classification of hells is not just limited to the eight hot ones and the eight cold ones.
Even though our spiritual wisdom hasn't ripened enough for us to directly perceive hells, we should still have conviction that the corresponding teachings on hells are totally credible. Having such faith and trust is very important.
If a spark were to fall on you, you would feel unimaginable pain. How, then, could you endure being placed on scorching metal and engulfed in the intense flames of hell in the future?
For one whole day on Earth 300 darts might strike you hard and cause you grievous pain, but that could never match a fraction of the smallest pain in hell.
It is quite easy to commit wrongdoings. If an individual doesn't confess them properly, the Hell of Ultimate Torment is not far from them.
Even if we may claim to have attained realization of the Great Perfection, but in fact we haven't purified our negative karma stored in our alaya, at the moment of death we may directly fall into the hell realm without even having the time to apply the pith instruction of the Great Perfection for liberation. Isn't that self-defeating?
