This is Lesson 42 from A Comprehensive Commentary on the Words of My Perfect Teacher, covering the Neighboring Hells and concluding with the hill of iron śālmali trees, within the chapter on "The defects of samsara." The lesson opens with a warning about Vajra Hell — reserved for those who break tantric samaya vows — stressing that pursuing tantric teachings without properly upholding the corresponding commitments can transform the very cause of swift realisation into the cause of swift rebirth in hell. The teacher then guides students through each of the five Neighboring Hells in sequence, detailing their specific torments and the precise karmic causes for rebirth in each: breaking precepts, hypocrisy and wrong livelihood, promoting wrong teachings, conspiring against others with harmful intent, and sexual misconduct. Throughout, the teacher draws on a wide range of sutras and shastras from both Tibetan and Chinese traditions, emphasising their shared foundations. The lesson concludes with a meditation instruction — visualising oneself in the hell realms, honestly examining one's past conduct, confessing misdeeds, and generating compassion for all beings currently suffering there. Practitioners are reminded that hatred is the primary cause of rebirth in the lower realms, and that true practice requires not just intellectual understanding but genuine transformation of conduct.
