46. The All-Determining Qualities of Actions

Meditation Guide

The Beginning

Take refuge and arouse bodhichitta.

The Main Part

Meditate: The quality of any action is determined by the intention behind it. If the intention is pure, the action is virtuous; if the intention is negative, the action is non-virtuous. Even an action that appears virtuous on the outside can be negative if it is motivated by worldly concerns like fame or pride.

On the other hand, an action that might seem negative could be virtuous if it is done with a pure heart of compassion for the benefit of others. Therefore, it is essential to constantly examine my own mind and make sure my motivations are sincere and altruistic.

I must realize that I cannot fool the laws of karma. Therefore, resolve: I will work hard to purify my motivation and ensure that everything I do is truly for the benefit of others and the Dharma.

The Ending

Dedicate all the merit of your practice to all sentient beings.
