The Beginning
Take refuge and arouse bodhichitta.
The Main Part
Meditate on the suffering of sickness: When we fall ill, our bodies are tormented by various pains—aches, fevers, chills, and weakness. We lose our appetite and cannot sleep well. We become dependent on others for our basic needs and may have to undergo painful medical treatments.
Sickness also brings mental anguish. We worry about our recovery, the cost of treatment, and the impact on our work and family. We feel frustrated and helpless as we see our plans and hopes being disrupted by illness.
No one can be free from sickness as long as we have this physical body. Therefore, resolve: When I am healthy, I will use my time and energy to practice the Dharma. When I am sick, I will use the sickness as a path to practice by contemplating the sufferings of others and generating compassion.
The Ending
Dedicate all the merit of your practice to all sentient beings.
