74. Bodhicitta in Aspiration I — Considering Others as Equal to Oneself

Meditation Guide

The Beginning

Take refuge and arouse bodhicitta.

The Main Part

For the sake of all sentient beings, you will meditate on the equality of self and others. Just as you desire only happiness and are averse to any suffering, so it is for all other sentient beings. Since all beings are equal in their desires and aversions, you should care for them as much as you care for yourself.

Reflect on the four immeasurables:

May all beings who are in want of happiness attain happiness (Love). May all beings who are plagued by suffering be free from suffering (Compassion). May all beings who have attained happiness never be separated from it (Joy). May all beings be free from attachment and aversion (Equanimity).

Resolve: For the sake of all sentient beings, I should meditate on the equality of self and others. May all sentient beings and I swiftly attain perfect enlightenment!

Reminder

The practice of bodhicitta has caught the attention of many psychology research institutes and is found helpful in making people more altruistic and peaceful.

The Ending

Dedicate the merit of your practice to all sentient beings.
