40. Negative Actions of the Speech

Meditation Guide

The Beginning

Take refuge and arouse bodhichitta.

The Main Part

Meditate on the four negative actions of the speech:

Lying: Telling what is not true to deceive others, especially claiming spiritual realizations one does not have.

Slander: Speaking to create division or discord between people.

Harsh speech: Using words that hurt others' feelings, such as insulting, mocking, or shouting at them.

Idle gossip: Engaging in meaningless talk that wastes time and distracts oneself and others from the Dharma.

Words can be more powerful than weapons in causing harm. Therefore, resolve: I will be mindful of my speech, always speak the truth, promote harmony, use kind words, and only speak when it is meaningful and beneficial.

The Ending

Dedicate all the merit of your practice to all sentient beings.
